Too early to take an HPT???

I went off birth control about a month and a half ago. I took the first two pills of a new pack before my husband surprised me by saying he was ready to go off and start a family. I intended to finish that month, but some things came up and I just ended up throwing it out after 2 days. Anyways, the ending date of my last period was around Oct. 18 or 19. I had two days of spotty bleeding around the 22-23 (I imagine this was due to taking 2 pills of a new pack and then tossing it). I haven't gotten my period yet and i'm unsure whether to date from my "real" period or the 2 days of spotting for a HPT. Can I test yet, or should I wait another week?? The anticipation is KILLING me, but I don't want to get my hopes too high up.
