Should i ask a popular girl in my school out if im shy over the phone?

Ok so i really like this girl in my school. Shes in the same grade as me and has been in a few of my cles before, however doesn't know me too well. Shes also very popular and nice to everyone in school, however im a very shy person. I was thinking of asking her out over the phone (mainly because she always hangs out with her friends and is never alone), but im afraid that since im not "as popular" as she is, it would look kinda weird/wrong if we were to hang out, therefore she might reject me. I'm also afraid that if she says no, shes gonna tell her friends and soon the whole school is gonna know and then make fun of me. What do you think i should do? What do you think shes going to say if i were to ask her over the phone? PLS HLP!!!
