Problem installing CPU into motherboard?

I have an ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard and a AMD Athlon II X3 445 Rana 3.1GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor that I want to connect. I am having trouble keeping the CPU in place because of the socket lever. It goes up and down just fine when theres no CPU chip, but after I place the chip in the lever won't go back down. When I try there is resistance and I am afraid of damaging the CPU. What should I do?
